What Is the Difference Between MLD and CDT?
If you or your clients are navigating lymphedema care, understanding the difference between Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is essential. While both support the lymphatic system, they serve different purposes and are used in different stages of treatment.
🌀 What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
MLD is a gentle, rhythmic massage technique designed to stimulate lymph flow and reduce fluid buildup. It’s often used to:
• Support general lymphatic health
• Reduce mild swelling or post-surgical edema
• Promote relaxation and detoxification
MLD is ideal for clients seeking preventive care, post-op recovery, or relief from minor fluid retention. It’s also a foundational skill used within CDT.
🧠 What Is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)?
CDT is a comprehensive treatment protocol for managing chronic or medically diagnosed lymphedema. It includes:
• Manual Lymphatic Drainage
• Compression bandaging or garments
• Skin care to prevent infection
• Exercise to support lymph flow
CDT is typically performed by certified lymphedema therapists and is considered the gold standard for long-term lymphedema management.

🌿 Which Is Right for You?
If you’re recovering from surgery, managing mild swelling, or seeking preventive care, MLD may be appropriate. If you have a lymphedema diagnosis or need structured, ongoing support, CDT is the recommended approach.
At our Dunedin-based practice, we offer trauma-informed lymphatic massage tailored to your needs. We also collaborate with certified CDT providers to ensure continuity of care.
